summer art classes
Join Arlington Arts Center for summer art classes covering a wide-range of subjects and mediums. This summer, we will offer a combination of popular classes from previous semesters as well as new offerings. Although class titles and subjects may be familiar, all projects will be new and creative. Week-Long Classes for Teens July 15-August 16, 1-4 p.m. & 1:30-4 p.m. Becoming An Artist Grade Range: 6 - 10 Build your understanding of drawing, sculpture, painting, and performance art by exploring traditional and experimental techniques. Classroom projects will be introduced by looking at contemporary artists' practices related to each discipline. Emphasis will be placed on observation and representation in combination with problem solving. Subject matter will include still life, the human figure, perspective, abstraction, mark making, construction techniques, and performance. Class will culminate with field trip to an art venue. Developing Nature and Drawing Grade Range: 6 - 10 In conjunction with AAC's Green Acres exhibition on human relationships and the natural world, this class will take a fresh approach to drawing landscapes, architectural environments, and natural objects. On mini-fieldtrips, students will sketch our neighborhood and site-specific Green Acres installations like the Gourd Palace. Students will also explore drawing with natural materials like walnut ink, wax, and plant dyes, which will be made in class. Students will also practice traditional drawing techniques while working from flowers, plants, and other natural subject matter. Painting Fundamentals Grade Range: 6 - 10 Students will learn the essentials of painting composition! Starting with preliminary sketches of still lifes and interiors, students will develop their sense of space and perspective. Students will put color theory into practice and and master paint application techniques and will create unique works by pairing paint with dry mediums like pastels. This is an essential class for students wishing to build on basic techniques and explore new avenues. This Is My City - Arlington Grade Range: 6 - 10 Arlington?s urban villages provide remarkable environments for students to become competent photographers. During this fieldtrip experience, students will learn how cameras work and methods for successfully capturing sights and faces. This class promises to give students a better understanding of where they live and how the camera can be used to both record memories and express point of view. Students are encouraged to use their own film or digital cameras; however, AAC will provide cameras to students do not have cameras. This class does not introduce film developing or printing skills. Students are required to bring printed images to each class, and are asked to print these images at home or via a professional provider at their own cost.
