The Imperfect Bubble We Live In

Homelessness in Arlington, Virginia is something that oftentimes goes unaddressed. Read here for more information and how you can help!

Every person is valued in the sight of God because as the saying goes, “God does not make mistakes.”

For the past three summers I have participated in a week-long mission trip through my church. A group of high school students travel to New York City and aid the homeless through various types of volunteer work. I have had so many fond memories on those trips, and it really does give you the chance to think outside of the normal Arlington, Virginia bubble that we often find ourselves living in.

The impact that these trips have had on me can be defined clearly by this: the world is not as pretty and simple as what my wonderful parents have often painted in my head. A lot of people have a lot of problems; and as scary as it seems, those problems are not just in New York City – or just in major cities.
In Arlington, there is a homeless community. These people are not bad people. They are down on their luck, out of work, suffering from an illness, or numerous other reasons. No one “chooses” to be homeless and living on the street. Treating them with respect and educating yourself of their lives and learning how to help are great ways to start.
Sometimes, helping others doesn’t need to take place in far-off cities. It can happen right here locally, too!
A-SPAN (Arlington Street People's Assistance Network) works to eliminate homelessness here in your very own community. Visit their website to see how you can volunteer your time or donate items! By aiding the people who need it the most you are doing nothing but benefitting the community around you!
