a rant about texting

 2 views on iMessage...

As more people in my social circle get iphones, imessage has seriously become a two-sided dilemma. I really don’t know how I feel about it… For those of you who haven’t made the leap to the latest and greatest smart phone, imessage is a texting device somewhat like a blackberry’s bbm, where you are sending and receiving messages even faster than texting. You can see when the other person is typing, when your messages have been delivered, and you can have a read receipt on if you want to so that the other person knows when you have read their message.

I think it is crazy to think how far this technology has come within the last three years. I have gone from a flip phone, to an Env touch with a keyboard, to an iphone, and each time I thought it was the coolest thing.

But with the new technology on the recent iphone app update to imessage, I am reluctant to say that I really do enjoy it. :/ The imessage capability can only work with other people who have iphones so the fact that LITERALLY every single one of my girlfriends has an iphone I feel like sometimes I just can’t keep up. It’s useless banter, in a group imessage with 14 other of my closest friends… Sure it’s great to be connected- don’t get me wrong I would die without being linked in- but it also makes me feel very isolated at times, and like I am far, far away from better and greater things that they may be experiencing.

When I get a message from the group chat, it is a conversation I am not even involved in, and I often don’t even take part in it at all - just open them to clear my screen without even reading them at all. But when I text someone individually and I have to wait and wait and wait for a response I feel like a total loser… Why are all of these people getting a response, and I have to sit here and keel over before the boy I like can take the 30 seconds to send a reply??

So anyways now that I have ranted and raved…  basically I think these days it’s pretty hard for a teen to turn it off sometimes and just be content with themselves because they are always so plugged in to all the other things that their friends are doing. It’s easy to say “oh I wish I could just turn my phone off sometimes” than it may be to actually do. I want to go back to the days when I was not so dependent!
